As promised last year, the United States Marine Corps Battle ColorDetachment is back and will perform at the Pasadena Rose Bowl on March4, 2007 at 12:00 pm. For those unfamiliar with the detachment, it iscomprised of:

1. The Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps (also known as "TheCommandant's Own"). These musicians will demonstrate a mastery of musicwhile on the march.

2. The Marine Corps Color Guard will be on hand to display the MarineCorps' battle colors and streamers earned during over 230 years offaithful service to our nation.

3. The Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. These Marines will perform acomplex drill movement with M1 Garand rifles (with fixed bayonets) -executing the movement with no verbal communication.

A flier is attached. There is no need to RSVP. This event is free, andseating is first come-first served.

The event is approximately one-hourlong.

I would also appreciate if you could pass this information along toanyone you know who may be interested in seeing these great Marines inaction.

kidd in my plt was sitton on an op when a single shot bounced off his turret sheild, missing his face..... 2 tanks from another comp. were at the range up street and rolled down to assist in securing the area along with 2 of our own.....they take turns knocking down an anbandon house where the shot could have come from.... alittle korn to help set the mood....

While traveling in Las Cruses NM over the Christmas holiday season, my wife and I visited the local Veterans' Memorial. Verrrrry, verrrrry nice. Las Cruces is a small community about 100 miles west of El Paso . Most of the locals are farmers, merchants and educators (large college there). But there must be a lot of patriotic blood flowing through the people for this memorial is one of the finest I have ever seen. For myself (being a retired Marine) the Marine Corps Memorial is most interesting. It is a three dimensional sphere of "our" eagle, globe and anchor. It was hand made by a retired Marine. It spins in the wind on its three sided axis showing every "clime and place".

Also in the park is a large v-shaped memorial with local names for every war Americans have served. And also a very nice memorial to other branches of services, units and wars including a great piece for the men who were on the Bataan Death March. So if you ever travel down I-10 or I-25, ask a local and take the time to visit the Las Cruces Veterans' Memorial. You'll be glad you stopped.

Paul Whitefield's Essay in The Los Angeles Times

Paul Whitefield's op-ed in yesterday's Los Angeles Times hits a low point even for that rapidly collapsing paper.

Judge for yourself, but the Vietnam veterans who called the program today after I read it in its entirety were not amused.

Mr. Whitefield declined the opportunity to appear on the program.
You can cancel you subscription via 1-800-252-9141.

It is possible that Mr. Whitefield is a 60-something Vietnam vet, but I am betting he's around 30, graduated from a small liberal arts college, and knows no one in the military today, much less any Vietnam veterans.

Under certain circumstances, special extra earnings for military service from 1940 through 2001 can be credited to an individual's record for Social Security Purposes. These extra earnings may help a person qualify for Social Security or increase the amount of the Social Security benefit. Special extra earnings, up to $1,200 per year are granted for periods of active duty or training. Social Security cannot add these extra credits to a record unless they are filed for. Take a DD-214 form to the Social Security Office. Individuals must ask for this benefit to receive it.

Don't Close Your Blinds

The other day, my nine year old son wanted to know why we were at war.My husband looked at our son and then looked at me. My husband and Iwere in the Army during the Gulf War and we would be honored to serveand defend our Country again today. I knew that my husband would givehim a good explanation. My husband thought for a few minutes and thentold my son to go stand in our front living room window.

He said "Son, stand there and tell me what you see?"

"I see trees and cars and our neighbor's houses." he replied.

"OK, now I want you to pretend that our house and our yard is the United States of America and you are President Bush.

"Our son giggled and said "OK."

"Now I want you to stand there and look out the window and pretend yousee Saddam come out of his house with his wife, he has her by the hairand is hitting her. You see her bleeding and crying. He hits her in theface, he throws her on the ground, then he starts to kick her to death.Their children run out and are afraid to stop him, they are screamingand crying, they are watching this but do nothing because they are kidsand they are afraid of their father. You see all of this, son....what doyou do?"

"Dad?"

"What do you do son?"

"I'd call the police, Dad."

"OK. Pretend that the police are the United Nations. They take yourcall. They listen to what you know and saw but they refuse to help. Whatdo you do then son?"

"Dad.......... But the police are supposed to help!" My son starts towhine.

"They don't want to son, because they say that it is not their place oryour place to get involved and that you should stay out of it," myhusband says.

"But Dad...he killed her!!" my son exclaims.

"I know he did...but the police tell you to stay out of it. Now I wantyou to look out that window and pretend you see our neighbor who you'repretending is Saddam turn around and do the same thing to his children."

"Daddy...he kills them?"

"Yes son, he does. What do you do?"

"Well, if the police don't want to help, I will go and ask my next doorneighbor to help me stop him." our son says.

"Son, our next door neighbor sees what is happening and refuses to getinvolved as well. He refuses to open the door and help you stop him," myhusband says.

"But Dad, I NEED help!!! I can't stop him by myself!!"

"WHAT DO YOU DO SON?" Our son starts to cry.

"OK, no one wants to help you, the man across the street saw you ask forhelp and saw that no one would help you stop hi m. He stands taller andpuffs out his chest. Guess what he does next son?"

"What Daddy?"

"WHAT DO YOU DO?" Our son is crying and he looks down and he whispers,"I'd close the blinds, Daddy."

My husband looks at our son with tears in his eyes and asks him. "Why?"

"Because Daddy.....the police are supposed to help people who needsthem...and they won't help.... You always say that neighbors aresupposed to HELP neighbors, but they won't help either...they won't helpme stop him...I'm afraid....I can't do it by myself Daddy.....I can'tlook out my window and just watch him do all these terrible thingsand...and.....do nothing...so....I'm just going to close the blinds....So I can't see what he's doing..and I'm going to pretend that it is nothappening."

I start to cry. My husband looks at our nine year old son standing inthe window, looking pitifu l and ashamed at his answers to my husband'squestions and he says...

"Son"

"Open the blinds because that man.... he's at your front door... "WHATDO YOU DO?"

My son looks at his father, anger and defiance in his eyes. He balls uphis tiny fists and looks his father square in the eyes, withouthesitation he says: " I DEFEND MY FAMILY DAD!! I'M NOT GONNA LET HIMHURT MOMMY OR MY SISTER, DAD!!! I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM, DAD, I'M GONNAFIGHT HIM!!!!!"
"Yes, Daddy."

I see a tear roll down my husband's cheek and he grabs our son to hischest and hugs him tight, and says... " It's too late to fight him, he'stoo strong and he's already at YOUR front door son.....you should havestopped him BEFORE he killed his wife, and his children and the old ladyacross the way. You have to do what's right, even if you have to do italone, before its too late." my husband whispers. THAT scenario I justgave you is WHY we are at war with Iraq. When good men stand by and letevil happen son, THAT is the greatest atrocity in the world. "YOU MUSTNEVER BE AFRAID TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO DO IT ALONE!" BEPROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN! BE PROUD OF OUR TROOPS!! SUPPORT THEM!!!SUPPORT AMERICA SO THAT IN THE FUTURE OUR CHILDREN WILL NEVER HAVE TOCLOSE THEIR BLINDS..."

A young Marine officer was in a serious car accident, but the only visible permanent injury was to both of his ears, which were amputated. Since he wasn't physically impaired he remained in the MarineS and eventually rose to the rank of General. He was, however very sensitive about his appearance. One day the General was interviewing three Marines for his personal aide. The first was an aviator, and it was a great interview. At the end of the interview the General asked him, "Do you notice anything different about me?"

The young officer answered," why yes, sir. I couldn't help but notice that you have no ears." The general got very angry at the lack of tact and threw him out.

The second interview was with a femaleLieutenant, and she was even better. The General asked her the same question, "Do you notice anything different about me?"

She replied, "Well, sir, you have no ears." The General threw her out also. The third interview was with a Marine Gunny. He was articulate, looked extremely sharp and seemed to know more than the two officers combined (surprise).

The General wanted this guy, and went ahead with the same question, "Do you notice anything different about me?"

To his surprise the Gunny said, "Yes sir; you wear contacts lenses."

The General was very impressed and thought, what an incredibly observant Gunny, and he didn't mention my ears. "And how do you know that I wear contacts?" The General asked.

The sharp-witted Gunny replied, "Well, sir, it's pretty hard to wear glasses with no freaking ears."

The Lord blessed our day at Camp Pendleton Sunday. The Lord gave us great servants, with Godly attitudes of joy, to serve the warriors and their families. The Lord gave us great weather (though earlier in the week the storm was scheduled to hit Sunday). The Lord fed over 700 people and multiplied the food. The Lord gave a toy to every girl and boy. The Lord provided enough canned goods for all the families to take food home. The Lord provided fun activities for the kids, great music, wonderful gifts for the adults, t-shirts, a fun raffle, and prayer for many. The Lord allowed us to see His Hand at work in the hearts and lives of people - there is no greater Christmas present than to experience God touching our hearts and changing the lives of people.

Some families came and got into line before 9:00am for a 2:00pm start time. There were some who did not recognize the need to stand in line, but went straight to the front of the line, since they had "special privileges" because they had just come from church. It was amazing in talking with them that they could not even tell me what they were standing in line for (toys, free food, a meal) - they just felt they should be able to stand in the front of the line. God graciously dealt with them and we appreciate the wisdom of all who talked with them and ministered to them the love of Christ. We are all at different places in our walks with the Lord. The Lord wants us to have a childlike faith, but not to act childish.

Again we recognize the intense need for prayer and appreciate all of you who faithfully prayer for Armor of Light. Many of you had some incredible talks and experiences with the warriors and families. Tears were shed and lives were touched, please continue to lift up these warrior families that God would cause a revival amongst them.

A couple friends and I put together this video to Rushlow Harris' "Bagpipes Cryin". We collected family photos, as well as some freinds photos, from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. There are some SEALS (the dude that co-wrote the song gave me some photos) in this as well as SF troops currently in country. Some ID's are obscured for security or at the request of the people in the photos (not all of them SF personnel).

The song was inspired by an essay written by a retired SEAL who lost 15 of his men, as well the Chinook pilots from the 160th, in June '05 in A-Stan.

My son, Cory, left the Computer Engineering Program at West Virginia University, a superlative educational institution, to volunteer to serve in the United States Marine Corps. He made it to Recon in less than one year,completing over a dozen schools, finishing with top scores in every single one of them. Cory, along with every Recon Marine, was/is a brilliant young man. They all volunteered - there is no draft as there was when you were in the Armed Forces. Cory, along with 3 other Recon Marines, died as the result of an IED explosion in May, 2006. These men, along with their peers, are superior in intellect. How dare you dishonor them by your careless words. You are a stupid, self-absorbed, fool.

I am not speaking as a member of any political party - in fact, I support more democrats at this juncture than republicans. But I loathe the disdain you display for my son and those whose magnificent service was given for something they held so dear to their hearts - freedom.

I pray that your political future is doomed. You are a detriment to every democrat with whom you a ssociate. If in deed, your words were, as you say, intended as a joke, then you are heartless. My son's life is certainly more than a joke. He and these almost 3,000 young men and women who have died with him, are much more valued and loved than to be used as pawns in your own petty political pundits.

You were not misunderstood. You were clearly heard and understood by us all. You were on national television. You are utterly disrespectful of our sons and of us, their families. I will work tirelessly to bring you down. You discredit every member of the Armed Forces. My name is Bob Calvert. If you do not remember me I began a talk showwhile I was still living in Colorado Springs near Ft Carson. It is calledTalking with Heroes. I started it because I heard over and over again fromour troops about them wanting to know why they rarely heard on the newsthe good things they had been and continue to do in helping the people inIraq or Afghanistan. I had also heard a lot from military support groups,veterans and people like me who have never been in the military wonderingwhy we rarely hear on the news about the good our men and women do.

In October of this year I spent two weeks in Iraq interviewing our men andwomen where they are serving. The purpose of this email is to request thatyou help us get the word out about these interviews as they are heard bothon the internet and now in five states on Cable TV.

In May 2006 a question was made to me by an Officer with the MinnesotaNational Guard asking me if I would be interested to take my talk show toIraq and interview our military there. It took a while to raise the moneybut I recently returned from a two week tour in Iraq. I was able tointerview military personnel across Iraq so that they could talk about thegood they have been and continue to do in Iraq. I was also with Iraqi ArmyBattalions near the Syrian Border and our Military Transition Teams whoare training them. The tour also included being in an Iraqi town at theGrand Opening of a school thanks to our National Guard and families backhere in the USA. I was able to interview the Principal.

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
Sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.
What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack; brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts...
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "It's really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at 'Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures; he's sure got her smile.

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother...
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that, you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."
Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,

When I set out to create the documentary film "Make Peace or Die: The First Days of War in Iraq with 1st Battalion 5th Marines" in many ways my personal intent was the same as Veterans Day: to honor the contributions made by, in this case, a small group of Marine Corps infantrymen.

To tell you a little about myself, I am the youngest of three boys. My oldest brother was a Marine and my middle brother was in the Navy. My father was a two-tour veteran of Vietnam. I was the first man in my family not to go into the military but rather studied cinema at the University of Southern California. My hope is that after watching this movie, the audience comes to deeply understand the level of honor, courage, and commitment with which each of these men serve -- as a filmmaker and an American, this is my duty.

Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization, will kick off its Fourth Annual Holiday Drive, to assemble and mail over 50,000 care packages to deployed troops for the Holidays.

Operation Gratitude's mission is to put a smile on a
service member's face, lift morale, and express the
appreciation of the American people for the sacrifices
of the men and women defending our freedom.
Beginning November 11, Operation Gratitude's more than 1000
volunteers, along with stars from Hallmark Channel's upcoming holiday movies, will assemble and ship at least 50,000 Holiday Care Packages filled with Flash Drives, Sports Calling Cards, DVDs and CDs, Candy, Gum, Cough Drops, Cookies, Hand Warmers, Skin Care Products, Coffee and Flavorings, Greeting Cards, Batteries, Energy Drinks, T-Shirts, Socks and assorted Snacks. Sound Off Letter of the Month

As a fairly new subscriber to Leatherneck, I have to tell you that I really enjoy each and every issue. My nephew just completed his four years of service as an 0311 [rifleman] and now is living life as a civilian.

When he first deployed to Afghanistan a few years ago, I started sending care packages to the Marines in his unit, “India” Company, 3d Battalion, Sixth Marine Regiment. Knowing that there were many Marines with little or no support from home is what initially got me started—the thought of those men and so far from home, in danger, and getting no mail.

That little project was supposed to last seven months. It has been nearly four years now, and I am still sending eight to 15, 15- to 25-pound boxes out every week, mainly to combat battalions all over Iraq.

Thanks to hundreds of generous Americans who have made this possible with their donations, I am hoping to continue for months to come. To date, I have raised about $55,000 and I am so very grateful to all who have donated, as I do not have nonprofit status, so they cannot claim the donations on their taxes. Some have given thousands, some many hundreds.

I have benefited by being blessed with new friends in the Corps family, all over the country. I have befriended family members and Marines all over, and they are so very special to me. Some will be friends for life, some for the present.

I decided to write you after reading the August issue; almost every article in the issue was about a unit that I ship to. It’s an extensive list. I ship to several of the units every time they deploy: 3/6, 3/8, 2d Tank Bn, Marine Attack Squadron 223, now 1/25, 1/8, 2/8, and many, many more. I love to read about the outstanding Marines to whom my packages go.
Sorry to be so long-winded. I feel so deeply about the Corps and its Marines.

X-mas care packages for the TROOPS

Most of you know how I support the military, particularly the Marine Corps. This year I was asked if I would adopt some deployed Marines for Christmas. I was like "Sure!" expecting two or three... Well, I have a platoon of 25 Marines in my care. At first I was overwhelmed and said "I can't do this!" but then it hit me that I CAN and WILL. Everything has to be shipped by Thanksgiving is the part that is going to be the most difficult.

For the platoon, we provide Christmas decorations--a small Christmas tree, Santa hat and beard, Christmas CD, etc. Things to make their little area festive. I know that may sound dumb, but I can also see how it would help to boost their morale.

Also for the platoon, we provide group gifts--things they can enjoy together. Suggested ideas were DVD's (no war movies) and games... I am not the most imaginative of people so if you have any ideas, don't hesitate to let me know!

Individually, we have a handmade stocking (my grandmother is making those) filled with small wrapped gifts for each person in the platoon. I'm having trouble with ideas for those, as well.

Hello everyone,

I am only two weeks from the Marine Corp Marathon, the excitement is too much! I can't believe that it is already here! Many of you have already gotten an email from me but I am sending another one. I have not quit reached my goal and asking that everyone help. Even if it is just five dollars, that five dollars can make a huge difference to a wounded soldier. I have friends going up with me to take pictures and I will be posting them to myspace as well as sending a photo to all those that sponsor me. Forward this to as many people that you can! Thank you for taking the time to read this letter with your busy schedule. I would like to start off by telling you a little about myself. I have been married to a Marine for the past ten years, a mother of four children and a full time student. My schedule is full of all kinds of daily activities, always taking time for personal fitness. I have ran the Naha Marathon, Ayashima Road Race Half Marathon and several 5K fun runs. I have currently set my sight on the Marine Corp Marathon this October 29th.

I know running 26.2 miles is the craziest thing that you have ever heard. Those that have never attempted a marathon will never understand. Just like those who dont serve in the military will never understand the life of a soldier. We are dedicated to an idea of a belief above the average person. You become a family even though you have nothing in common with the person next to you. Still, looking in to their eyes you know that you have walked that persons footsteps. The Marine Corps Marathon combine both the ideas and beliefs of a marathon runner and the Marine Corp traditions, making this the greatest marathon.

Now why do I write all of this? Knowing what it takes to dedicate yourself to something more, I ask for your help. I am not running this race just for myself, I run for all the men and women that put themselves in harms way to protect our country. Operation Second Chance has dedicated themselves to assisting our wounded soldiers in rebuilding their lives. They assist in home remodeling, cost in expense for the family and support in these difficult times. All making it just a little bit easier for them to rebuild their lives.

The organization is run and started by other military wives and parents that felt a need to reach out to our soldiers and their families.

I ask that you support these men and women yourself; and sponsor me in this challenge that I have taken on. My goal is to raise $3,000.00 by the day of the race. They're doing an autograph signing at a Ft Bragg PX tomorrow and they tell me that GG Liddy will be using the song next Thursday on his show honoring Medal of Honor recipients. They're also on tour with Toby for the remainder of 2006 if you can catch a show.It doesn't matter if you like country music or not you need to check this out. I promise you'll like it. A great song about honor.
